ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the US Chargé d'Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a strong demarche over remarks made by the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, during his visit to Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), according to a statement from Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pakistan strongly condemned and categorically rejected the characterization of Jammu and Kashmir as a "part of India," the ministry said.

Gor called Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India.

It underscored that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory, awaiting final disposition in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

"The irresponsible statement by the U.S. Ambassador negated the long-standing and well-documented position of the United States on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, and also ran contrary to the United States' commitment to supremacy of international law and the UN Charter," the Foreign Office statement read.

The demarche comes as Pakistan seeks to ensure that the US position remains consistent with the disputed status of the territory.

According to UN Security Council resolutions, the status of Kashmir is undecided, and it is an internationally recognized disputed area.

Pakistan emphasized that while it appreciates President Donald Trump's offer to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in the aftermath of Marka-e-Haq, the US side must ensure that its public statements remain consistent with the disputed status of the territory.

The dispute over Jammu and Kashmir dates back to the partition of British India in 1947. Both India and Pakistan claim the region in full but administer separate parts of it. The UN has long maintained that the status of Kashmir is undetermined and has called for a peaceful resolution in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

Tensions have periodically flared over the territory, with Pakistan repeatedly raising the issue at international forums and urging the global community to play a role in resolving the dispute.
