Indian student protests continue after minister's resignation as calls expand to include PM Modi's resignation

NEW DELHI - Student-led protests continued across several Indian cities on Sunday despite the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and an earlier announcement by organizers that demonstrations would be called off, with some protesters escalating their demands to include the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Videos circulating on social media showed large gatherings of students in multiple locations, including a rally at Mumbai's Shivaji Park, where participants were seen chanting slogans calling for the prime minister's resignation.

A spokesperson identified as Ashutosh Ranka of the Cockroach People's Party (CJP), a group associated with the student movement, called for the release of relatives of an activist identified as Junaid, alleging they had been detained by police in Uttar Pradesh.

Ranka warned that if they were not released, the movement would mobilize larger demonstrations in the state.

Some protesters argued that the education minister's resignation did not address broader concerns, with participants carrying placards and chanting slogans calling for political change.

Political analysts quoted by local commentators said the continuing demonstrations suggest the movement has evolved beyond its initial demands and could become a broader youth-driven political force.

The developments come amid one of India's largest student protest movements in recent years, with demonstrations continuing in several parts of the country despite concessions by the government.
