Pakistan seeks Singapore’s help for repatriation of Pakistani, Iranian seafarers held near Singapore waters

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Friday that Islamabad was working closely with Singapore, Iran and US authorities to secure the welfare and repatriation of Pakistani and Iranian seafarers aboard vessels seized by U.S. authorities near Singaporean waters.

In a statement posted on X, Dar said he had spoken with Vivian Balakrishnan and requested Singapore’s support in facilitating the safe return of 11 Pakistani and 20 Iranian crew members.

“Spoke with Singaporean Foreign Minister H.E. Vivian Balakrishnan and requested Singapore’s support in facilitating the welfare and repatriation of 11 Pakistani and 20 Iranian seafarers, aboard vessels seized by U.S. authorities and currently near Singaporean waters,” Dar said.

The Pakistani foreign minister added that he also held discussions with Abbas Araghchi as Islamabad and Tehran remained in “close coordination” over the issue.

Dar said Pakistan was prepared to facilitate the return of Iranian nationals through Pakistani territory if required.

“Pakistan also stands ready to facilitate the safe repatriation of Iranian nationals to Iran via Pakistan,” he said.

The statement did not specify the identities of the vessels or the reasons behind their seizure by U.S. authorities.

Dar said Pakistan appreciated the cooperation being extended by Singapore and noted that Pakistan’s Foreign Office and other relevant authorities were in contact with US officials and other stakeholders to ensure the crew members’ safety and early return.

The development comes amid heightened tensions in regional waters following the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel, which has disrupted maritime activity in key shipping routes across the Middle East and Asia.
