North Korea's Kim oversees tests of upgraded weapons, vows 'deadly and destructive' offensive posture

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised tests of major weapons systems on Thursday, including an upgraded multiple rocket launcher capable of striking targets deep inside South Korea, state media reported Friday.

The tests, conducted on the 76th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, evaluated an upgraded 240mm-caliber 24-tubular multiple rocket launcher with a range extended to 90 kilometers, a tactical ballistic missile with a "special mission" warhead, and extended-range shells for a 155mm self-propelled howitzer, according to KCNA.

The rocket launcher system now features full automation and a self-steered precision guidance system. The howitzer shells achieved a range of 65 kilometers—sufficient to reach the Seoul metropolitan area from positions near the border.

The "special mission" warhead tested is designed to "inflict fatal damage on major targets including airfields, ports and power facilities of the enemy," according to the Korean Central News Agency.

Expressing "great satisfaction" with the results, Kim framed the tests as proof of major technological progress in implementing the ruling Workers' Party's military modernization policy.

"The present international situation, in which sovereignty can be defended and existence guaranteed only by complete upper-hand in strength, makes it unnecessary to add any rhetoric to explaining why the bolstering up of the defence capabilities is the indispensable first national strategic work," Kim told accompanying officials.

He stressed that North Korea's self-defense policy is not merely defensive but focuses on strengthening "the deadly and destructive offensive posture to make no enemy dare to confront". He added: "To make the enemies feel constant uneasiness and fear is just an important aspect of the exercise of war deterrent".

The weapons display comes just two days after North Korea commissioned its first 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, which Kim hailed as a symbol of the country's growing naval capabilities.
