Pakistani senior lawmaker's fundamental rights violations, family urge top court to save his life

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD: A senior lawmaker in Pakistan's life is under threat as authorities registered several cases against him and shifting from one province to another.

Azam Swati 75-year-old senator of the country was first arrested in October after his controversial tweet against the former army Chief General (R) Bajwa, who was later released by the court.

However, he was again arrested on Nov. 27 after his speech in Rawalpindi where he criticized Bajwa and demanded the powerful general to public details of his assets.

Authorities registered several cases against him in Islamabad, Balochistan and Sindh provinces.

First he remained in custody in Islamabad but few days later he was shifted to Quetta and the local court handed him over to police on five days remand.

However, on Thursday Balochistan High Court quashed all cases and ordered to release of him.

But soon after the court order, Sindh police has taken him into custody and shifted him from Balochistan to Sindh province through a special airplane.

“My father Senator Azam Swati is being transferred from Quetta to Larkana by the Sindh police. A Supreme Court ruling clearly states that “Multiple FIR’s of the same occurrence cannot be filed.” Where is rule of law to protect my father’s fundamental rights?,” lawmaker’s daughter Farah Swati tweeted.

“Honorable CJ and High Court Judges where is the Rule of Law to protect my father against an unfair investigation and to not allow the police to abuse their investigative powers by transferring him from one province to another?

“My father Azam Swati is a law maker. Hon CJ and Hon High Court Judges your job is to evaluate the law fairly without prejudice. Why is my father being treated in such an unjust and undignified manner? Can you please give my father the justice he deserves?,” Farah writer on social media platform.

Former Information Minister and leader of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Fawad Chaudhry said that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah’s plane went to Quetta to bring Swati and the senator was arrested on the same charges the high court had quashed.

Chaudhry claimed Swati was brought to Larkana and then moved to Qambar Shahdadkot. “These are the human rights of a senior politician and senator of Pakistan.”

Shireen Mazari, former Human Rights Minister, also criticized the government and said “the way Senator Swati is being tortured through dozens of FIRs & being sent from province to province in police custody via special planes it would seem he & his use of a few intemperate words are the greatest threat to Pakistan's security & not terrorism or Indian mly ambitions.

“CDA & ICT police raided Azam Swati's house tonight & sealed it after partially demolishing property. Such vengeful behaviour against a mbr of Senate simply over some intemperate words. Continuous torture on him doesn't seem to have satisfied hunger for revenge,” Mazari tweeted.
