UN Security Council condemns deadly mosque bombing in Islamabad

By The South Asia Times

NEW YORK -  The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the suicide bombing at a mosque in Pakistan’s capital that left more than 30 people dead and dozens injured earlier this month.

In a press statement issued Friday, council members denounced the February 6 attack in Islamabad as a heinous act of terrorism and extended condolences to the victims’ families, as well as to the government and people of Pakistan. They also wished a swift and full recovery to those wounded in the blast.

The 15-member body reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms represents one of the gravest threats to international peace and security. It called for those responsible  -- including perpetrators, planners, financiers and sponsors -- to be brought to justice.

Council members stressed that acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of motive, and urged all countries to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

The bombing has renewed concerns over security challenges in Pakistan, with authorities continuing investigations into the attack as global leaders voice solidarity with the country.
