Pakistan rejects India's criticism over Afghanistan strikes, defends counterterrorism actions

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  Pakistan on Wednesday rejected India's criticism of its recent military actions against what it described as terrorist infrastructure inside Afghanistan, saying the operations were "legitimate, targeted and proportionate" and carried out in accordance with international law.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Tahir Andrabi dismissed comments made by India's Ministry of External Affairs, calling New Delhi's allegations "baseless."

Pakistan said India's statement ignored what it described as Islamabad's right to take measures to protect its citizens from cross-border terrorism.

The Foreign Ministry maintained that Pakistan's actions were aimed at terrorist infrastructure and were conducted in line with international law.

The statement also accused India of historically interfering in the internal affairs of neighboring countries and violating their sovereignty.

It further criticized India over the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, accusing New Delhi of denying Kashmiris their right to self-determination under relevant United Nations resolutions.

Islamabad also alleged that India has been supporting terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory against Pakistan, claiming such activities violate the United Nations Security Council sanctions regime.

Pakistan said India's accusations and statements should not be given credence and described New Delhi as a "regional spoiler."

Reaffirming its security policy, the Foreign Ministry said Pakistan would continue to take "all appropriate measures" to ensure the safety and security of its citizens in accordance with international law.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions following Pakistan's recent cross-border military operations targeting terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan. Islamabad says the strikes were launched in response to a surge in cross-border attacks by militant groups.

Violence has increased in Pakistan's northwestern and southwestern provinces in recent years, with Islamabad blaming the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan for many of the attacks. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban government of allowing militants to operate from Afghan territory, an allegation Kabul has consistently denied.

Pakistan said that India supports militant groups targeting Pakistan.
