Pakistan warns UN of rising terror threat from Afghanistan, urges action against TTP

By The South Asia Times

NEW YORK - Pakistan has warned the UN Security Council that terrorist groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), are operating with “virtual impunity” from Afghan soil, posing a serious threat to regional and international security.

Speaking at a Security Council briefing on threats to international peace, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the evolving terrorism landscape, particularly after the Taliban takeover, has emboldened several militant groups.

He stated that Afghanistan’s de facto authorities provide a “permissive environment” for organizations such as TTP, while Al-Qaida continues to enjoy patronage and ISIL-K remains active with an external operational focus.

Members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM/TIP) were also reported to be moving freely within the country.

“These terrorist groups pose a threat not only to Pakistan, but to the entire region and beyond,” Ahmad told the Council, adding that recent militant activity in Central Asia near the Afghan border has reinforced these concerns.

The envoy stressed the urgency of preventing sophisticated weapons left behind by foreign forces in Afghanistan from falling into the hands of militants. He also called for accountability for “external destabilizing actors” accused of supporting and financing proxy groups operating from Afghan territory.

Highlighting Pakistan’s counterterrorism record, Ahmad said the country has suffered more than 90,000 casualties and major economic losses while serving as a frontline state in the global fight against terrorism.

He urged the international community to adopt a coordinated response, strengthen sanctions mechanisms, and ensure zero tolerance for all forms of terrorism, warning that the growing threat from Afghanistan demands immediate global attention.
