'No compromise on nuclear status,” Kim Jong Un declares in policy speech amid US attacks on Iran

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed that his country will continue to strengthen its position as a nuclear power “indefinitely,” underscoring a hardline stance amid rising global tensions.

Speaking at the first session of the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly in Pyongyang, Kim said the country’s strategic direction—centered on self-reliance and nuclear deterrence—has been “absolutely right,” pointing to what he described as significant national progress over the past seven years.

According to remarks carried by the Korean Central News Agency, Kim emphasized that economic and military gains were achieved without dependence on foreign assistance, crediting a policy of relying “entirely on our own strength.” He said this approach enabled the country to complete multi-year development plans, expand production capacity, and implement nationwide development initiatives.

Central to his address was a firm rejection of any shift away from nuclear capabilities. Kim stated that the government would “resolutely and indefinitely solidify” its nuclear status, describing it as essential for safeguarding sovereignty, national dignity, and long-term security.

He also signaled a more confrontational posture toward perceived adversaries, warning that any actions threatening North Korea’s security would be met with a “merciless” response. While not naming specific countries in detail, Kim reiterated longstanding hostility toward external forces and criticized what he called global “coercion and tyranny,” particularly referencing the role of the United States.

On foreign policy, Kim called for a shift toward more flexible and interest-driven diplomacy, urging officials to abandon outdated practices and adopt strategies aligned with changing global power dynamics. He said Pyongyang would continue to strengthen ties with traditional partners while recalibrating its international engagement to prioritize national interests.

Kim also framed North Korea’s trajectory within a broader global context, arguing that rising opposition to dominance by major powers is accelerating the emergence of a “multipolar world.”

The speech reinforces Pyongyang’s continued focus on nuclear deterrence as the cornerstone of its national strategy, likely complicating future diplomatic efforts aimed at denuclearization.
