Iranian President reaches Pakistan in first overseas trip since war with US, Israel

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for a high-stakes state visit, marking his first overseas trip since the end of the devastating war with the United States and Israel that began on February 28 .

The Iranian leader was received at Nur Khan Airbase in the garrison city of Rawalpindi by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with federal ministers and senior officials.

He was accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, including key ministers.

The visit comes just days after the signing of the landmark "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding" on June 18—a 14-point framework mediated by Pakistan that formally ended months of conflict between Washington and Tehran and reopened the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz .

In a press release, the Iranian Embassy in Islamabad described the visit as a gesture to "convey the message of the Government and people of Iran to the Government and people of Pakistan following a year marked by solidarity, support, and Pakistan's sincere mediatory endeavours aimed at de-escalating tensions and restoring peace and stability in the region."

The agenda includes a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, with discussions on trade, energy cooperation, border security, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity. This will be Pezeshkian's second visit to Pakistan as president, following a state visit last August.

The visit provides an opportunity to discuss ongoing diplomatic engagements following the Islamabad MoU, as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest. The agreement, which includes provisions for a 60-day window to resolve outstanding issues—including Iran's nuclear program, sanctions relief, and a reconstruction fund—has significantly elevated Pakistan's diplomatic standing.

Pakistan's role as mediator has drawn international praise, with the country being recognized globally for facilitating the breakthrough. According to official sources, the two sides will also explore new avenues to elevate their "longstanding brotherly ties to new heights".

The choice of Pakistan as Pezeshkian's first foreign destination since the war underscores Tehran's appreciation for Islamabad's critical role in securing the ceasefire and advancing the diplomatic process. Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have consistently praised Pakistan's "constructive and sustained mediation efforts" .

The visit also reflects the shared commitment of Pakistan and Iran to deepen their historic and cultural ties and underscores their common aspiration for peace, stability, and sustainable progress in the region.
