Iranian President Pezeshkian to visit Pakistan for high-level talks on trade, energy and regional security

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, will arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday for a state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and advancing discussions on regional diplomacy, trade, energy cooperation and security, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

The visit comes at the invitation of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and will be President Pezeshkian's second trip to Pakistan since assuming office. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers and senior Iranian officials.

According to Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Iranian president will hold separate meetings with Pakistan's leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He is also scheduled to meet the Chairman of the Senate, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The talks are expected to cover the entire spectrum of Pakistan-Iran relations, with both sides seeking to deepen cooperation in key sectors such as trade, energy, border security, people-to-people exchanges and regional connectivity.

Pakistan and Iran share a border of about 900 kilometers and have long-standing cultural, religious and economic ties. In recent years, both countries have sought to expand bilateral trade and enhance cooperation in border management while addressing security challenges in their frontier regions.

A major focus of the discussions is expected to be the implementation of agreements aimed at boosting economic cooperation and improving regional connectivity. Officials from both countries are also likely to explore new mechanisms to facilitate cross-border commerce and investment.

The visit comes at a significant moment in regional diplomacy following the recent signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a landmark agreement that established a framework for dialogue and cooperation between the United States and Iran with Pakistan acting as a mediator. Pakistani officials said the two sides would review ongoing diplomatic engagements related to the memorandum and exchange views on broader regional and international developments.

Analysts view President Pezeshkian's visit as part of a broader effort by Islamabad and Tehran to coordinate on regional issues amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia. Discussions are also expected to focus on regional stability, economic development and opportunities for greater cooperation in multilateral forums.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said the visit reflects the shared commitment of Islamabad and Tehran to further strengthen their historic relationship and underscores their common desire for peace, stability and sustainable development across the region.

The state visit is expected to conclude with a series of high-level engagements and discussions aimed at charting a future course for enhanced cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
