South Korea, Poland signs agreement to build nuclear power plant in European nation

ANKARA (AA) - South Korea and Poland on Monday agreed to jointly build a nuclear power plant in the European nation, local media said.

A letter of intent signed between the  state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Co., Polish private energy group ZE PAK and Polish state-owned public power company PGE in Seoul to working together on the development plan of a nuclear power plant at the Patnow site, Yonhap News Agency citing the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said.

Patnow site is located some 240 kilometers [149 mile] west of Warsaw

"The construction of the nuclear power plant in Patnow could be a support for Poland's nuclear energy program, which is crucial for us from a national perspective," the agency quoted Jacek Sasin, the Polish deputy prime minister as saying.

"Certainly, this would be the next step in strengthening business cooperation between our countries, and a great opportunity for knowledge and experience transfer," the minister added.

The agreement came just days after Warsaw announced that they would team up with the US and American company Westinghouse to build its first nuclear power plant.

If the deal finalized, it would be the South Korea first nuclear power plant export following the 2009 Barakah project in the United Arab Emirates, according to the agency.

President Yoon Suk-yeol government also set a target to export 10 nuclear power reactors by 2030.
