Pakistan positions itself as key mediator in US–Iran crisis, PM Sharif meets Turkish, Egyptian top diplomats

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for urgent collective efforts to end ongoing hostilities in the Middle East, as Islamabad hosted a high-level quadrilateral meeting involving key regional powers.

In a statement posted on X following meetings with Hakan Fidan of Türkiye and Badr Abdelatty of Egypt, Sharif stressed the need for coordinated action to halt violence that he said was causing significant loss of life, economic damage, and destruction across Iran and other countries in the region.

It is imperative to urgently bring an end to hostilities,” the prime minister said, emphasizing the wider regional impact of the conflict.

The meetings were part of a broader diplomatic initiative that included Saudi Arabia, as top diplomats gathered in Islamabad to explore pathways toward de-escalation and political dialogue.

Sharif expressed appreciation for the role played by Türkiye and Egypt in ongoing peace efforts and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States.

He also highlighted growing international confidence in Pakistan’s mediation efforts, noting that Islamabad is prepared to play a “positive and constructive role” in bringing both sides to the negotiating table.

Diplomatic sources indicate that Pakistan is likely to host direct US–Iran talks as early as this week, marking a potentially significant step toward easing tensions that have disrupted global energy markets and heightened fears of a broader regional conflict.

The Islamabad initiative reflects intensifying diplomatic momentum, as regional actors seek to prevent further escalation and promote a negotiated settlement to one of the most volatile crises in recent years.
