ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's top court on Saturday barred the Prime Minister's son to use power as Chief Minister until next week after he was declared a successful candidate in the Friday election by the Deputy Speaker through a controversial ruling.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan's three-member bench was headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhter, who heard the petition filed by opposition party’s of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi.

In its verbal order, the apex court said that it didn’t want a vacuum to be created in such a large province.

It also clarified that Hamza would work in accordance with the law and the Constitution until then, adding that Hamza was not allowed to use his power as chief minister in any way that would benefit him personally, according to Dawn.

On Friday, Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari declared Hamza Shehbaz as the winner despite opposition nominee Elahi securing the majority of 186 votes while Hamza got 176 votes.

However, Mazari ruled that PML-Q members' votes will not be counted in the election of Punjab chief minister in light of party head Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain's letter.

PTI and PML-Q rejected the ruling and challenged it in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The next hearing will be held on Monday.
