ISLAMABAD — Pakistani security forces thwarted a suicide attack targeting a military post in the country's northwestern South Waziristan district, killing four suspected militants, local security sources said, according to Pakistan's Dawn newspaper.

The attempted attack took place late Wednesday night in the Kari Kot area of Lower South Waziristan's Wana region, where militants allegedly tried to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into a security forces' position.

According to the report, security personnel detected the threat before the vehicle reached its target, killing the suspected suicide bomber and three other militants during the ensuing operation.

The military post was reportedly being used to provide security for local residents and prevent the movement of militants toward Wana Bazaar.

Security sources quoted by Dawn said the attackers sought to destroy the post after repeatedly failing to achieve their objectives in the area.

Following the attack, security forces launched a search and clearance operation to locate any remaining militants.

Pakistan's government refers to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as "Fitna al-Khawarij," a term used in official statements to describe the terrorist TTP group.

The latest attack comes amid heightened security measures in the tribal region. Last month, authorities imposed restrictions under Section 144 of Pakistan's Criminal Procedure Code in parts of Upper and Lower South Waziristan, banning public gatherings because of security concerns and ongoing military movements.

South Waziristan, located along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, has experienced a resurgence in militant violence in recent years. According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), the country's security situation deteriorated sharply in May after two months of relative improvement, with most attacks concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and neighboring Balochistan.

Earlier this year, security forces also foiled a suicide attack near Azam Warsak Bazaar in South Waziristan after an explosives-laden vehicle targeted another military post. The incident killed one civilian and injured 15 others while damaging nearby buildings, including a religious seminary, shops and homes.

In November last year, militants attacked Cadet College Wana by detonating an explosives-filled vehicle at the institution's main gate before entering the campus. Pakistan's military later said all five attackers were killed during a clearance operation.

Pakistan has intensified counterterrorism operations in its western border regions amid a rise in attacks claimed by or attributed to militant groups operating from across the Afghan border, allegations that Afghanistan's Taliban-led authorities deny.
