Death Toll in Northwestern Pakistan Climbs to 344 as Floods Ravage KP Districts

By The South Asia Times

PESHAWAR: The death toll from devastating floods in northwestern Pakistan rose to 344 on Saturday, with 328 deaths reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) alone, after a cloudburst triggered massive flooding across multiple districts.

Buner, the worst-hit district, has recorded over 150 fatalities as flash floods swept away entire villages, destroying houses and infrastructure. “We lost everything — I have nothing left now,” said Shah Zamin, a resident of Pir Baba in Buner, recounting the devastation.

The disaster has also badly affected Swat, Shangla, Dir Lower, Dir Upper, Bajaur, Mansehra, Battagram, and Torghar, where rescue operations remain underway. Teams from the army, Rescue 1122, and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) are engaged in relief efforts, despite damaged roads hampering access to remote areas.

Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur visited Buner on Saturday to supervise ongoing operations and assured victims of government support and compensation.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged tourists to avoid visiting northern and hilly regions, warning of more rains expected from Sunday, which could further exacerbate flooding and landslides.
