US 'vacated' key military assets from Indo-Pacific amid Iran war, ex-officials warn

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON -  Former senior US officials have expressed alarm that the Trump administration has stripped critical military deterrence assets from the Indo-Pacific amid war with Iran, according to Yonhap News.

The warnings come after reports that Washington has relocated parts of its THAAD missile defense system from South Korea to the Middle East and deployed over 2,000 US Marines from Japan to support the war effort against Iran.

Meanwhile, no fully operational US aircraft carrier remains in the Indo-Pacific theater.

"A very large component of the American military capability that is there to deter in the Indo-Pacific has been vacated," one former official told reporters Monday.

The official noted the irony of withdrawing assets that were "painstakingly" installed -- referring to the 2017 THAAD deployment in Seongju, which sparked intense diplomatic friction with China and local protests.

"Some of the Marines have left... and some of the capabilities that have been withdrawn from Korea," he said, warning that deterrence has been "shifted" at a time when China is launching unprecedented sorties around Taiwan.

The former official described the asset shift as "surprising," adding: "Even during the worst periods of preoccupation, we didn't vacate in the way that we are doing now."
