Pakistan pays tribute to fallen 'blue helmets' on UN Peacekeepers Day, calls for 'invest in peace' paradigm shift

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan paid rich tribute to the sacrifices of UN peacekeepers on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2026, while calling for a fundamental shift from reactive conflict management to proactive peace preservation in increasingly complex modern war zones.

In a statement issued Friday, the military's media wing, ISPR, said Pakistan's association with UN peacekeeping transcends six decades, reflecting the country's steadfast commitment to international peace.

Since 1960, more than 237,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served on UN missions worldwide, the statement said. Among them, 183 brave Pakistanis gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in service to UN peacekeeping efforts.

Pakistani Blue Helmets are currently deployed in high-risk theatres including the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), South Sudan (UNMISS), and the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), where they are performing multidimensional operations ranging from active military missions to combating climate-driven challenges.

The ISPR noted that contemporary war zones have transformed, becoming increasingly unstable, complex, and asymmetric in nature. Today's peacekeepers face hybrid threats, including cybersecurity risks, digital misinformation campaigns, political fracturing, and climate-induced humanitarian emergencies.

This year's theme, "Invest in Peace," underscores a critical paradigm shift, the statement said. "Investing in peace" in the contemporary era requires a technological and structural evolution.

"We must invest in advanced intelligence architecture, robust civilian protection mechanisms, and climate-resilient operational frameworks to safeguard vulnerable populations effectively," the ISPR said.

The Government of Pakistan and its Armed Forces reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the ideas and objectives of UN peacekeeping operations by investing in peace through a multifaceted commitment encompassing human capital, state-of-the-art training facilities, and systemic capacity building.

"On this revered and proud occasion, Pakistan stands resolute alongside the United Nations, reminding the global community that enduring peace is not a guaranteed phenomenon but requires continuous, collective investment," the statement read.

Pakistan reiterated its foundational resolve to act as the vanguard for international stability, security, and humanitarian relief under the United Nations flag.
