Trump meets world leaders at G7 summit with Iran agreement high on agenda

By The South Asia Times

ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, France  -  US President Donald Trump met world leaders at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France on Tuesday, with a newly reached agreement between Washington and Tehran dominating discussions, according to CNN.

Trump held talks with leaders from several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, and was expected to meet leaders of three Arab states as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Sources cited by CNN said discussions among G7 leaders on the Iran agreement had been “frank” as governments sought clarity on the framework reached between the United States and Iran.

The US president said he would publicly release the text of the agreement within days and send it to Congress for review. Trump described the accord as a major diplomatic breakthrough and said the next phase of negotiations, focused on Iran’s nuclear program, would be easier to complete.

“Here’s what it says: Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the summit.

Trump also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he needed to be “more responsible” regarding Lebanon, where fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has continued despite expectations that the U.S.-Iran agreement could help reduce regional tensions.

Meanwhile, signs emerged of easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route. Iranian officials said a limited number of vessels had been allowed to transit the waterway ahead of a formal signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Geneva. Vessel tracking data reviewed by CNN showed several tankers and cargo ships moving through the strait since Monday.

The agreement follows months of conflict between the United States and Iran that disrupted regional trade and raised concerns over global energy supplies. Oil prices have fallen sharply amid hopes that the deal will restore stability and ensure the continued flow of energy through the Gulf.

World leaders at the G7 summit are expected to closely monitor developments as technical negotiations continue ahead of the formal signing ceremony.
