#BREAKING: Trump says peace deal with Iran will be announced 'shortly' as Strait of Hormuz set to reopen

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that a peace deal with Iran has been "largely negotiated" and will be announced shortly, following a series of high-level calls with regional leaders from the Middle East and beyond.

In a statement posted on Truth Social from the Oval Office, Trump said an agreement between the United States, Iran, and several other nations is now in its final stages.

"An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries," Trump wrote.

"In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened," he added.

Trump said he held a "very good call" with a wide range of regional leaders, including:

  • Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud

  • UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan

  • Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, and Minister Ali al-Thawadi

  • Pakistan's Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah

  • Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

  • Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi

  • Jordan's King Abdullah II

  • Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa

Trump also confirmed a separate call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he said "likewise, went very well."

"Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly," Trump said, thanking his followers for their attention.

The announcement follows days of intense diplomatic activity, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statement from New Delhi on Sunday that the world could receive "good news" on an Iran deal within hours. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also announced earlier that Islamabad would host the next round of US-Iran peace talks soon.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz -- a vital chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world's oil passes -- would mark a significant de-escalation. Iran has largely blocked the strait in response to a joint US-Israeli military attack, disrupting global energy supplies and sending oil prices soaring.

Iranian media have reported that a potential memorandum of understanding includes provisions to return the number of transiting ships to pre-war levels within 30 days, along with waivers on Iranian oil sanctions and the release of some frozen Iranian funds.

However, Iranian officials have emphasized that nuclear issues are not part of the preliminary agreement and that no final decision can be made without the approval of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

With Trump announcing a deal is imminent, global attention now turns to whether Tehran will formally sign on to an agreement that could reshape the security landscape of the Middle East.
