TEHRAN -  Iran has called on the United Nations Security Council to condemn what it described as an “unprovoked” and deadly US attack on a residential home hosting a wedding ceremony in southern Iran that killed five civilians, including a four-year-old child, and wounded more than 70 others.

Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, made the appeal in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the president of the Security Council on Wednesday.

Darzi said the attack was part of a new wave of US strikes against southern Iranian cities that, according to Iran’s Health Ministry, killed at least 18 people and injured 142 others between Aug. 30 and Sept. 2.

The Iranian official called on the Security Council to condemn the attacks and take action over what Tehran described as violations of international law and the UN Charter.

Iranian state media reported that 44 children were among those wounded, while one child and two women were among those killed in the latest attacks.

The developments came as US President Donald Trump was reportedly considering declaring the war with Iran over while Washington continues to maintain a military presence in the Middle East.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump has discussed with senior aides whether to formally declare the Iran war over and reportedly favors such a move. The report said Trump believes continued economic pressure could eventually force Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program or face economic collapse.

The US launched what it calls Operation Economic Outcast last week, targeting Iranian economic sectors including oil, shipping, aviation, gold, technology and digital assets.

Iran’s military also said it had carried out missile and drone strikes against US military installations in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

Iran’s army said its forces targeted US facilities at Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait, including satellite communications systems, equipment depots and fighter aircraft hangars.

It also said missile and drone attacks targeted US forces and radar systems at Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE.

The claims were reported by Iranian state television and could not immediately be independently verified.

The Iranian strikes came despite warnings from Trump of further US military action and underline the risk of continued escalation across the wider Middle East.

The latest exchanges have raised concerns over the humanitarian impact of the conflict as well as the possibility of further attacks on US forces and Iranian targets across the region.
