Trump to review Iran peace plan as US accelerates $8bn arms sales to Middle East allies

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said he will review a new proposal from Iran as tensions persist over the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington moves ahead with billions of dollars in arms sales to regional allies, CNN reported.

According to Iranian state media, Tehran has submitted a 14-point response to a US proposal aimed at easing the standoff, though details of the plan remain unclear. The development comes amid fragile ceasefire conditions following weeks of heightened confrontation that disrupted global energy supplies and trade routes.

At the same time, the US has fast-tracked approximately $8 billion in arms sales to Middle Eastern partners, signaling continued military support despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Analysts say the parallel tracks of negotiation and military buildup highlight the uncertainty surrounding the crisis.

Adding to tensions, Iran’s parliament is expected to approve new restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, potentially limiting access for vessels from countries it considers hostile. The waterway, a vital corridor for global oil shipments, has already been at the center of disruptions that drove up fuel prices worldwide.

Trump also indicated plans to further reduce US troop deployments in Europe, suggesting a broader reassessment of military commitments abroad.

The latest developments underscore a volatile situation in the region, where diplomatic efforts continue alongside security concerns, leaving global markets and energy supplies on edge.
