Thai-flagged cargo ship hit near Strait of Hormuz, 20 crew rescued as attacks on shipping rise

By The South Asia Times

BANGKOK - A Thai-flagged cargo vessel was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, leaving three crew members still aboard the ship while 20 others were rescued, according to Thai naval officials and media reports.

The vessel, Mayuree Naree Bangkok, was struck near its stern while sailing in the Gulf region during a voyage from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to India, according to MarineTraffic shipping data, as reported by the Thai Enquirer.

The ship was carrying 23 crew members when the incident occurred.

Admiral Thadawut Thatpitakkul of the Royal Thai Navy said Thai naval personnel stationed in Bahrain coordinated with authorities in Oman to assist the crew.

Initial reports indicate that 20 crew members have been rescued, while three remain on board the vessel as officials assess the situation and check for possible injuries. Authorities said no deaths have been reported so far.

The cause of the attack and the party responsible remain under investigation.

The Mayuree Naree Bangkok, reportedly operated by Bangkok-based Precious Shipping, was one of three commercial vessels reportedly struck in the Strait of Hormuz on the same day, highlighting growing risks to maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

Maritime security firms cited by Reuters say at least 14 vessels have been hit in the region since tensions linked to the latest conflict involving Iran escalated in late February.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil and gas supplies, and recent attacks have raised concerns about the safety of commercial vessels passing through the region.
