Pakistan and Türkiye sign three energy MoUs to boost power sector cooperation

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan and Türkiye have taken a significant step forward in their energy partnership with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during high-level consultations in Istanbul, the Pakistani Ministry of Energy announced Thursday.

The agreements establish formal cooperation frameworks between key Pakistani and Turkish energy entities: ISMO with EPIAŞ (Energy Exchange Istanbul), ISMO with TEİAŞ (Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation), and PPMC with TEDAŞ (Turkish Electricity Distribution Corporation).

The MoUs cover a comprehensive range of power sector cooperation areas, including post-privatization governance frameworks, electricity market development, ancillary services regulations, transmission planning, distribution sector management, digitalization, and institutional capacity building.

Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari welcomed the agreements, emphasizing Pakistan's commitment to learning from Türkiye's successful experience in electricity market reform and power sector modernization.

"These partnerships represent an important step towards strengthening Pakistan's energy institutions through collaboration with leading Turkish counterparts," he said.

The Minister highlighted that institutional cooperation would facilitate the transfer of practical knowledge and operational best practices to support Pakistan's efforts in improving efficiency, enhancing service delivery, and building a more sustainable and competitive power sector.

The Turkish side expressed its commitment to long-term institutional cooperation, paving the way for joint technical initiatives, expert exchanges, training programs, and collaborative projects.

The Government of Pakistan views these agreements as an important outcome of the Pakistan–Türkiye energy dialogue and a concrete demonstration of the growing strategic partnership between the two brotherly nations in the energy sector.
