UN Aid to Afghanistan Stalled as Taliban Refuses Entry at Torkham Border

UN Aid to Afghanistan Stalled as Taliban Refuses Entry at Torkham Border

By Imran Nasir

TORKHAM, Pakistan - Humanitarian aid destined for Afghanistan has been stuck for the past two days at the Torkham border crossing on the Pakistan side after Afghan Taliban authorities reportedly refused to allow the United Nations consignment to enter the country, local officials said.

A local official at Torkham told media that several containers carrying UN humanitarian supplies remain parked at the border despite having completed all formalities in Pakistan.

“Pakistan Customs has already cleared the consignment, and the Pakistani government has given permission for the aid to enter Afghanistan on humanitarian grounds,” the official said, adding that clearance from the Afghan side has not been granted.

The development comes despite assurances by Pakistan last month that it would facilitate UN humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had stated that Islamabad would allow UN aid shipments to cross into Afghanistan purely on humanitarian considerations, even amid strained bilateral relations.

Pakistan closed its border crossings with Afghanistan on October 11, 2025, following a series of clashes and cross-border militant attacks.

Islamabad has accused Kabul of allowing the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to operate from Afghan soil and of providing support to militants carrying out attacks inside Pakistan—allegations repeatedly denied by the Afghan Taliban.

The border closure led to a sharp decline in militant attacks inside Pakistan, according to security officials, but caused significant disruption to bilateral trade and humanitarian movement.

While parts of the border, including Torkham, were partially reopened in early November 2025 to allow the return of refugees, trade and cargo movement have largely remained restricted.

Pakistani officials say they remain committed to facilitating humanitarian aid for the Afghan people, while urging Afghan authorities to cooperate and ensure that relief supplies are not obstructed amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Afghanistan.
