Rotary International Leaders Visit Pakistan to Boost Polio Eradication Efforts

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD— A senior Rotary International delegation visited Pakistan from August 18–22 to reaffirm the organization’s commitment to eradicating polio and strengthening community partnerships in one of the last two polio-endemic countries in the world.

The high-level team was led by Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo, Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Holger Knaack, International PolioPlus Committee Chair Mike McGovern, and Aide to the President John de Giorgio. The delegation was hosted by Aziz Memon, Chair of Rotary’s National PolioPlus Committee.

During their visit, the leaders held meetings with Pakistan’s top officials, including the Prime Minister, the Federal Health Minister, and senior military leadership. They also met with Senator Ayesha Raza and the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) team, along with polio program partners. Their engagements underscored Pakistan’s central role in achieving a polio-free world.

The delegation toured the Pakistan Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health and took part in immunization activities, highlighting Rotary’s long-standing support for frontline health workers. Rotary has contributed nearly US$3 billion globally to eradicate polio, including more than US$473 million for WHO and UNICEF’s work in Pakistan.

Speaking during the visit, Rotary President Francesco Arezzo praised Pakistan’s progress, saying: “Pakistan’s progress against polio is a testament to the dedication of health workers and communities. Rotary will continue to stand alongside Pakistan until every child is protected.”

Trustee Chair Holger Knaack emphasized the link between health and infrastructure, noting Rotary’s investments in water filtration plants across underserved communities. IPPC Chair Mike McGovern added that the persistence of Pakistan’s polio teams brings the world closer to finishing the job.

Aziz Memon highlighted the country’s progress, saying Rotary’s global support and government partnerships have been crucial in reducing cases.

Rotary, together with the Government of Pakistan and global partners such as WHO, UNICEF, CDC, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, continues to drive progress toward global eradication. Donations to Rotary’s End Polio campaign are matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation, further supporting the fight.
