Pakistan, US Finalize Tariff Agreement to Boost Exports

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance announced on Monday the successful conclusion of tariff-related discussions with the United States, resulting in a new 19% tariff rate for Pakistani exports to the American market.

The agreement, which follows high-level talks between the two sides, is being hailed by the Pakistani government as a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral trade ties and boosting export potential, particularly in key sectors like textiles, said Pakistan Finance Ministry in a statement.

“This balanced and forward-looking approach by the U.S. keeps Pakistan competitive relative to other South and Southeast Asian countries,” the ministry said in an official statement, noting that the 19% tariff would help sustain and grow exports at a crucial time for the national economy.

The textile sector—Pakistan’s leading export industry—is expected to benefit most from the revised tariff structure. However, officials believe the deal could unlock opportunities in other sectors as well, including agriculture, manufacturing, and value-added goods.

The government is calling on exporters and trade bodies to adopt an aggressive marketing strategy to take full advantage of the new trade framework. It also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting exporters through enhanced policy measures, trade promotion efforts, and market intelligence sharing.

Looking ahead, the ministry expressed optimism about further cooperation with the U.S. in areas such as investment, artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, minerals, and energy. The statement underlined Pakistan’s intention to continue engaging closely with President Donald Trump’s administration to advance shared goals of economic development and mutual prosperity.

The finance ministry also acknowledged the role of the Ministry of Commerce, Pakistan’s mission in Washington, and stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in achieving this breakthrough.
