Pakistan welcomes Lebanon ceasefire, urges lasting peace across West Asia

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD -  Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, calling it a significant step toward easing tensions and restoring stability in the volatile West Asian region.

In an official statement, Zardari emphasized that Pakistan places high importance on regional stability, stressing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue, mutual respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international law. He said the ceasefire offers a crucial opportunity to move toward a lasting resolution.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the president noted that Islamabad remains actively engaged with regional and international stakeholders to reduce tensions, particularly between the United States and Iran. He underlined that durable peace in West Asia depends on addressing broader drivers of conflict and pledged Pakistan’s continued support for efforts aimed at de-escalation and a comprehensive settlement.

At the same time, Zardari cautioned that the current momentum remains fragile. He pointed to a broader understanding tied to a temporary cessation of hostilities between Washington and Tehran, which included expectations of restraint across the region, including in Lebanon. Any deviation from this spirit, he warned, risks reigniting tensions and undermining progress.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also welcomed the ceasefire, reiterating Pakistan’s “unwavering support” for Lebanon’s sovereignty and its commitment to backing all efforts aimed at securing lasting peace.

“I welcome the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, facilitated through bold and sagacious diplomatic efforts led by President Donald Trump, and express the hope that it will pave the way for sustainable peace,” Sharif said in a statement.

The development comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the broader West Asian landscape, where recent escalations have raised concerns of a wider conflict. Pakistan’s leadership has increasingly positioned the country as a proponent of dialogue and mediation, urging all sides to exercise restraint at what officials describe as a critical moment for regional peace.
