Pakistan, Kuwait agree to expand strategic partnership, discuss Middle East security

ISLAMABAD -

Pakistan and Kuwait agreed on Tuesday to deepen cooperation across key economic, security and strategic sectors while reaffirming close coordination on regional and international issues, including developments in the Middle East, during high-level talks in Islamabad.

Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar held delegation-level talks with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who is on an official visit to Pakistan. The two sides reviewed bilateral relations and agreed to establish Joint Working Groups on energy, trade and investment, agriculture and food security, information technology, education and health to accelerate cooperation.

Dar welcomed Kuwait's recent ratification of the Pakistan-Kuwait Defence Cooperation Agreement, signed in 2023, saying it would strengthen institutional links between the two countries' armed forces and expand defense cooperation.

Later, the Kuwaiti foreign minister called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who reaffirmed Pakistan's solidarity with Kuwait and condemned attacks on Kuwait and other Gulf countries amid the ongoing regional conflict. Sharif said Pakistan would continue to play the role of an honest mediator and facilitator in efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister thanked Pakistan's leadership for its role in advancing dialogue and diplomacy to help ease regional tensions and restore peace. He also reaffirmed Kuwait's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and praised the contributions of the Pakistani community to Kuwait's development.

Both sides agreed to maintain regular high-level consultations, coordinate closely at multilateral forums, including the United Nations, and exchange official delegations to further advance the longstanding Pakistan-Kuwait partnership.
