Pakistan, China top diplomats welcome Iran-US understanding, stress regional peace

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday welcomed the understandings reached under the Iran–United States Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), describing them as an important step toward lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the two leaders spoke by telephone and emphasized the importance of implementing the understandings reached between Washington and Tehran while maintaining dialogue to peacefully resolve remaining issues.

During the conversation, Wang praised Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and mediation efforts, saying they had helped create conditions for sustained engagement between Iran and the United States. He said Islamabad had made a valuable contribution to international peace and stability.

Dar, in turn, thanked China for its support of Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two sides and acknowledged Beijing’s role in promoting regional stability, including through initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The two ministers also highlighted the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route, noting its significance for international trade, energy supplies and the world economy.

Beyond regional issues, the officials discussed the recent visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to China and agreed to continue implementing its outcomes, including advancing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and expanding bilateral economic cooperation.

The reported breakthrough follows months of conflict between the United States and Iran that began in late February, when military strikes and a U.S.-led blockade sharply escalated tensions across the region. The crisis disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and raised concerns about global energy markets.

Pakistan has played a mediating role throughout the conflict, hosting talks between US and Iranian officials and working with regional partners to promote diplomacy. Pakistani leaders have recently said a final peace agreement is nearing completion, with a formal signing ceremony expected in Geneva later this week.

Both Pakistan and China agreed to remain in close contact on bilateral and regional matters.
