Pakistan rejects UK remarks on Azad Jammu and Kashmir, urges restraint on diaspora comments

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected what it called “irresponsible and ill-informed” remarks made by members of the Pakistani diaspora in the United Kingdom and certain British lawmakers regarding Azad Jammu and Kashmir, urging foreign actors to avoid interfering in what it described as Pakistan’s internal affairs.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Spokesperson, the Foreign Office said it had taken “serious note” of recent comments and questions raised in the UK, arguing that they reflected a lack of understanding of the historical and political context of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. The ministry advised individuals and political figures making such remarks to exercise caution and ensure accuracy before commenting on sensitive issues.

The statement also criticized sections of the diaspora for allegedly making “insinuations” about the situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, urging them instead to “contribute positively” to their country of residence rather than engaging in what it termed interference in Pakistan’s domestic matters.

Responding to concerns over governance and civil liberties in the region, the Foreign Office reiterated that both Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir “fully recognise and respect” constitutional rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and political participation. However, it stressed that acts of violence, vandalism, destruction of public infrastructure, and attacks on civilians or law enforcement personnel could not be justified under any circumstances.

The statement further called on the British government to caution individuals and groups it said were supporting “proscribed organisations,” urging respect for democratic processes, judicial decisions, and the rule of law in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir remains a disputed territory between Pakistan and India, while administrative regions under its control are governed under their respective constitutional frameworks.
