Pakistan PM Sharif hosts Iranian delegation as ‘Islamabad Talks 2026’ aim to advance US-Iran peace efforts

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan hosted a high-level Iranian delegation on Saturday as part of the ongoing “Islamabad Talks 2026,” a major diplomatic initiative aimed at easing tensions between the United States and Iran following a recent ceasefire.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met the visiting delegation, which was led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Consultative Assembly, and included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Sharif welcomed Iran’s engagement in the talks and reaffirmed Pakistan’s “sincere resolve” to continue facilitating dialogue between the parties. He expressed hope that the negotiations would build momentum toward meaningful outcomes, contributing to regional and global peace and stability.

Senior Pakistani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, were also present during the meeting.

The Islamabad Talks come at a critical time, following heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran that recently brought the region to the brink of wider conflict. A ceasefire agreement has created an opening for diplomacy, with Pakistan stepping in as a neutral facilitator.

Officials say delegations from both Iran and the United States have arrived in Islamabad for the talks, which are expected to address key issues including regional security, sanctions, and pathways to de-escalation.

Pakistan’s role as host underscores its efforts to position itself as a bridge-builder in a volatile region, leveraging longstanding ties with both sides to encourage constructive engagement. The outcome of the Islamabad Talks is being closely watched by global leaders amid hopes for a durable diplomatic breakthrough.
