North Korea Tests Cruise and Anti-Ship Missiles from Naval Destroyer, KCNA Reports

By The South Asia Times

SEOUL — North Korea has conducted a fresh round of missile tests from a naval destroyer, state media reported, as the country continues to advance its maritime strike capabilities and reinforce its military posture.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test-launch of strategic cruise missiles and anti-warship missiles took place on April 12 from the destroyer Choe Hyon, operated by the Navy of the Korean People’s Army.

Leader Kim Jong Un observed the drills alongside senior defence officials and naval commanders. The exercise was aimed at verifying the operational efficiency of the vessel’s integrated weapons command system and improving crew readiness in missile launch procedures.

KCNA reported that two strategic cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles were fired during the test. The cruise missiles reportedly remained airborne for between 7,869 and 7,920 seconds, while the anti-ship missiles flew for 1,960 to 1,973 seconds. All missiles followed pre-set trajectories over the West Sea of Korea and struck their targets with what the report described as “ultra-precision” accuracy.

The test also evaluated an upgraded anti-jamming navigation system, intended to enhance missile guidance reliability in contested environments.

On the same day, Kim was briefed on the weapons configuration plans for additional destroyers currently under construction. He expressed satisfaction with recent advancements in defence science, according to KCNA.

Reaffirming Pyongyang’s long-standing military doctrine, Kim emphasized the need to continuously strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent and enhance both strategic and tactical strike capabilities, while improving rapid response readiness.

The latest test underscores North Korea’s ongoing efforts to expand its naval firepower amid heightened regional security concerns.
