Japan praises Pakistan’s role in US-Iran talks, backs peace efforts

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Japan has praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating recent talks between the United States and Iran, expressing strong support for the ongoing peace process and its implications for regional stability and global energy security.

The remarks came during a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, according to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday.

During the call, the two leaders discussed the “Islamabad Talks,” a Pakistan-hosted diplomatic initiative that brought US and Iranian delegations together following a fragile ceasefire. Prime Minister Takaichi commended Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue and helping secure the ceasefire, underlining its importance for broader regional peace and the stability of global energy supplies.

Prime Minister Sharif, in response, thanked Japan for its support and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continuing its mediation efforts to ensure the ceasefire holds. He also expressed appreciation to both the US and Iranian delegations for their engagement in extensive discussions in Islamabad.

The two leaders further discussed strengthening bilateral ties, with both sides expressing a desire to expand cooperation across multiple sectors. They agreed to maintain close coordination moving forward.

The exchange highlights growing international recognition of Pakistan’s diplomatic role in a critical phase of efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.
