Malaysia condemns Israel, calls for immediate opening of Al-Aqsa gates

By The South Asia Times

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday condemned Israel over the continued closure of Masjid al-Aqsa, urging the immediate reopening of the site to worshippers.

As Muslims worldwide prepare for Eid al-Fitr, Anwar said Israeli forces have kept the mosque’s gates shut since Feb. 28, when tensions escalated following Israel’s military action against Iran.

The closure has prevented worshippers from accessing Islam’s third holiest site through the final days of Ramadan and into Eid.

In a statement, Anwar described the move as having “no legitimate basis in law or morality,” calling it a clear violation of international law and human dignity. He warned that the continued restrictions reflect a growing sense of impunity.

Malaysia called on governments with influence over Israel to move beyond statements and apply concrete pressure to ensure the mosque’s reopening.

Addressing Palestinians marking Eid under restrictions, Anwar praised their resilience, saying they are not alone and reaffirming Malaysia’s continued support.

The closure of Al-Aqsa during a key month of Ramadan has intensified international concern, with calls mounting for unimpeded access to religious sites in Jerusalem.
