Iran leaders accuse US of undermining talks, warn over blockade and ceasefire violations

By The South Asia Times

TEHRAN — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran remains open to dialogue and agreement but warned that “breach of commitments, blockade and threats” are major obstacles to meaningful negotiations.

In a statement posted on social media, Pezeshkian criticized what he described as contradictions between rhetoric and actions by Iran’s adversaries, saying the international community can see “endless hypocritical rhetoric.”

Separately, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian parliament and top negotiator, said a sustainable ceasefire would only be possible if maritime blockades are lifted and what he called “hostage-taking of the world’s economy” is halted. He added that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would not be possible under continued violations and escalating tensions.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also warned that blockading Iranian ports constitutes an act of war and a breach of ceasefire terms. He further alleged that attacks on commercial vessels and detaining their crews represent serious escalations.

Araghchi said Iran would continue to defend its interests and counter pressure, emphasizing that the country has the capability to withstand restrictions and respond to what he described as coercive measures.

The statements come amid heightened regional tensions and fragile diplomatic efforts, with Tehran repeatedly calling for respect of its rights and an end to economic and military pressure as conditions for progress in negotiations.
