US-Iran talks begin in Islamabad as Pakistan PM meets Vance and Iranian delegation

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD – High-stakes peace negotiations between the United States and Iran officially commenced Saturday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held separate meetings with both delegations, marking the beginning of what Pakistan hopes will be a path to durable peace in the region.

The Prime Minister first met with US Vice President JD Vance, who was assisted by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Sharif was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi.

Commending the commitment of both delegations to engage constructively, the Prime Minister expressed hope that these talks would serve as a "stepping stone toward durable peace in the region," according to a Prime Minister's Office press release.

Sharif reiterated that Pakistan looks forward to continuing its facilitation of both sides in making progress toward sustainable peace.

The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, also met with the Prime Minister separately earlier Saturday.

The direct negotiations between US and Iranian teams are expected to take place at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, with the Pakistani military providing security. The talks aim to transform a fragile two-week ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement.
