Political tension in India - 4 killed in post-election violence in India after BJP sweeps West Bengal

By The South Asia Times

NEW DELHI - At least four people were killed in political unrest in India’s eastern state of West Bengal following rigging allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as they won a majority of seats in the state.

Police and party officials said clashes erupted between rival supporters in the state capital Kolkata, after results were announced on Monday, according to AFP.

The BJP secured a sweeping win, capturing 206 out of 294 assembly seats in the state of over 100 million people -- its first-ever victory there.

The state had been governed since 2011 by Mamata Banerjee, leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), who also lost her seat and rejected the election outcome.

Both parties traded accusations over the violence. The BJP said two of its workers were killed, while the TMC reported the “brutal murder” of two of its supporters. A senior police official confirmed four deaths and said one police officer was injured by gunfire.

The state is currently under violence as Banerjee refused to resign as Chief Minister and pave the way for BJP to form the government.
