B-52 crash at California base kills all 8 aboard, Air Force confirms 'not survivable'

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON - A United States military B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after takeoff at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday, with all eight crew members aboard believed to have perished, officials said.

"Initial indications are that the crash was not survivable," the base said in a statement posted on social media.

Aerial footage from the scene showed virtually nothing remaining of the massive eight-engine aircraft. Black smoke rose from a large swath of charred desert near what appeared to be a runway, with emergency vehicles clustered at the perimeter. The wreckage was scattered over a wide area.

The military did not immediately release the identities of the crew nor say whether the bomber was armed at the time of the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

Edwards Air Force Base, located in the Mojave Desert about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, has long served as a premier test site for experimental and operational military aircraft. The B-52, a strategic bomber first introduced in the 1950s, remains a cornerstone of the U.S. Air Force's long-range strike capability despite its age.

The base has suspended normal operations as recovery teams and investigators begin the process of securing the crash site. No information was immediately available regarding the flight's intended mission or destination.
