Over 200 dead, dozens injured as heavy rains and floods batter northwestern Pakistan

By The South Asia Times

PESHAWAR – Torrential rains and flash floods have killed over 200 people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with hundreds others injured and 20 reported missing, Pakistani officials said on Friday.

Rescue officials said the disaster has caused widespread destruction in multiple districts, with flash floods sweeping away dozens of houses and damaging infrastructure. The worst-affected areas include Swat, Bajaur, Dir Lower, Dir Upper, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, and Torghar, where flooding and heavy downpours continue.

So far over 200 people lost lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five in Giglit Baltistan and 9 in Azad Kashmir, according officials

Rescue 1122 teams have evacuated dozens of people stranded in floodwaters in various locations. “Our teams are working round the clock to rescue affected families and move them to safer places,” a Rescue 1122 spokesperson said.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise as search operations continue in remote areas cut off by damaged roads and landslides. Floodwaters have also destroyed crops and swept away livestock, adding to the misery of local communities.

The provincial government has urged residents in vulnerable areas to move to higher ground and follow safety advisories, as more rain is forecast in the coming days. Relief operations are ongoing, with tents, food, and medical assistance being provided to those displaced.
