Pakistan Army says 22 militants killed in counterterrorism operation in North Waziristan

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s military said Tuesday that security forces killed 22 militants during an ongoing counterterrorism operation in the northwestern district of North Waziristan near the Afghan border.

In a statement, the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said the area sanitization operation began on May 17 in the Shewa area of North Waziristan following what it described as credible intelligence reports regarding the presence of militants referred to by the military as “khwarij.”

The military said troops engaged militant positions during intense exchanges of fire over the past 24 hours, resulting in the deaths of 22 militants allegedly linked to what it called the “Indian-sponsored Fitna-al-Khwarij.” Weapons and ammunition were also recovered during the operation.

According to the statement, the militants had been involved in multiple attacks and militant activities in the region. The ISPR further alleged that the group used local civilians as human shields and coerced residents to facilitate their movement through the area.

The military said the operation remains ongoing and that the area has been cordoned off as troops continue efforts to eliminate remaining militants.

Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in militant violence in recent years, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The Pakistani Taliban, also known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has frequently been blamed for attacks targeting security forces and civilians. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban administration of allowing TTP militants to operate from sanctuaries inside Afghanistan, an allegation Kabul denies.

The military said the operation is part of Pakistan’s broader counterterrorism campaign under the “Azm-e-Istehkam” strategy approved under the country’s National Action Plan framework.
