PTI leader injured in gun attack in Malakand amid rising threats

BATKHELA, Pakistan - A local leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was seriously injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in the mountainous Malakand region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, according to local police.

Falak Sher, a PTI officeholder and former Secretary of Union Council Pat Baba, was returning from a family visit when assailants allegedly ambushed his car, Malakand police said in a statement.

Multiple bullets struck the vehicle, causing it to plunge off the roadside into a ravine. He sustained severe shoulder injuries and other wounds.
The attack followed a series of threats against him in recent months. Earlier on July 18, his family discovered a letter warning him of death for allegedly refusing medical treatment to a wounded individual said to be linked to the banned militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Sher said he filed a police complaint after receiving the threat.

Earlier in February last year he was abducted by unidentified men and subjected to torture and interrogation over his political affiliation with PTI, the party founded by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

PTI leaders say their workers have faced intimidation and violence since nationwide unrest following Khan’s arrest in May 2023.
