Climate changes: GLOF puts thousands of lives at risk in NW Pakistan

CHITRAL: Pakistan's northern and northwestern regions are facing terrible effects of climate change as dozens of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) burst during the last week, causing heavy damage in the Chitral area.

According to the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, at least two suspension bridges in Chitral were washed away by a heavy flood last week.

On Monday, another glacial lake outburst in the Larkspur area of Chitral caused heavy damage to roads including local people properties.

“There is no bridge at this spot, heavy machinery exist but the flow of water is very speedy and stone washed away soon after leveling a little bit span,” said a local official.

Hundreds of tourists were also stuck in the area where the local administration was busy rescuing them, he added.

According to Pakistan Metrology Department, there are 3000 lakes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Giligit Baltistan provinces and 33 of them have been declared vulnerable which can burst at any time

Last month, a similar incident took place when Hassanabad bridge on the Karakoram Highway in Hunza was destroyed and swept away in a GLOF event. Authorities had said that the glacier melted because of intense heat, according to Dawn.

In April, the country’s Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman was warned that GLOF incidents could increase in the country due to rising regional temperatures.
