Death toll from Kunar earthquake surpasses 2,200 as winter looms

By The South Asia Times

KABUL  – The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province has climbed to 2,205, with at least 3,640 others injured, officials confirmed Thursday.

Search and rescue operations remain underway in the districts of Noor Gul, Chawkay, and Manogai, where entire villages were flattened, said Hamidullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman of Taliban.

Local authorities said many people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble, warning that the death toll could rise further,

Relief efforts are continuing as thousands of families have been displaced. Tent villages have been set up in several areas, with humanitarian agencies providing food, water, and emergency supplies.

The United Nations has warned that with winter just weeks away, living in tents will be untenable in Kunar’s hilly regions, where temperatures drop sharply.

Authorities say relief operations are ongoing, but the needs remain overwhelming amid fears of further devastation as aftershocks continue to rattle the quake-hit province.
