Beyond diplomacy: China's Wang Yi personally ensures injured Pakistan's Dar's health before letting him leave Beijing

By The South Asia Times

BEIJING/ISLAMABAD -  In a remarkable display of the deep-rooted Pakistan-China friendship, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi refused to let his injured Pakistani counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, return home on Tuesday night -- insisting he stay overnight in Beijing for proper medical care after learning of his shoulder fracture.

What was scheduled as a one-day working visit turned into an overnight stay after Wang Yi, noticing Dar’s discomfort during their talks, intervened with characteristic Chinese warmth and hospitality.

According to Ali Dar, the son of the Pakistani foreign minister, a video circulating on social media shows Wang Yi speaking to Dar in an insistent manner, pressing him not to fly back to Islamabad at night.

“Wang Yi was telling Mr. Dar that he should not return at night, but instead stay overnight in Beijing and fly back to Pakistan in the morning,” Ali Dar said in a post on X.

The Chinese foreign minister successfully convinced Dar to change his plans. But the gesture did not end there.

After dinner, Wang Yi arranged for a special team of doctors to visit the state guest house to conduct a thorough medical check-up on the Pakistani diplomat.

“May Allah keep the friendship between Pakistan and China prosperous and strong like this. Ameen,” Ali Dar added.

Dar sustained a hairline fracture in his right shoulder on Sunday, March 29, during the reception ceremony for Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in Islamabad.

The incident occurred as Dar was calling the Egyptian minister to the stage for a ceremonial photo session. A video widely circulated on social media showed Dar losing his balance and falling, though he quickly rose and continued with the official proceedings.

Despite the injury, Dar completed the entire quadrilateral meeting involving foreign ministers from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt -- working through the pain with painkillers. His son revealed that the family had to insist on a medical examination late that night, which confirmed the hairline fracture.

Defying medical advice to rest, Dar departed for Beijing on Tuesday morning for his second visit to China this year -- a decision officials said reflected how seriously Islamabad takes its deepening role in Middle East mediation.

Despite his injury, Dar received a warm reception upon arrival in Beijing. He was hosted at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, one of China’s most prestigious venues for foreign dignitaries.

After their extended talks, Dar expressed his gratitude on X:

“Heartfelt thanks to my dear friend Foreign Minister H.E. Wang Yi and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China for the warm hospitality and excellent arrangements during my visit. Well done #TeamPakistan at our Embassy in Beijing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, for their professionalism and support in ensuring the successful conduct of this visit.”

- Beyond Bilateral Warmth: A Five-Point Peace Initiative

The visit was not merely about personal care -- it produced substantial diplomatic outcomes.

Wang Yi and Dar jointly launched a five-point initiative for restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and the Middle East region.

The five proposals are:

  1. Immediately ceasing hostilities

  2. Initiating peace talks as soon as possible

  3. Ensuring the safety of non-military targets

  4. Ensuring the safety of navigation (shipping lanes in the Gulf)

  5. Safeguarding the primacy of the UN Charter

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described the initiative on April 1 as being summed up in “three words: cease, talk, and ensure”.

During their talks, Wang Yi conveyed China’s appreciation and support for Pakistan’s active diplomatic role in ending the Middle East conflict and promoting peace.

Dar briefed Wang Yi in detail on Pakistan’s ongoing efforts, including the recent quadrilateral meeting in Islamabad involving foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt.

Wang Yi acknowledged that initiating peace talks “would be no easy task” but emphasized that such efforts were in the common interests of all parties .

- A Friendship Beyond Formalities

The two foreign ministers also reviewed bilateral relations, underscoring the growing momentum under CPEC 2.0 and noting that 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China diplomatic relations.

But it was the personal gesture -- Wang Yi’s insistence on Dar’s health and his arrangement of medical care -- that captured public attention in both countries.

As Dar returned to Islamabad on Wednesday morning, his son’s words echoed across social media: a friendship so deep that even a fractured shoulder becomes an occasion for care, compassion, and the strengthening of bonds between two nations that call each other “iron brothers.”
