Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev begins two-day state visit to Pakistan

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Pakistan on Thursday for a two-day state visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.

He was received at Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif, with a 21-gun salute and a red-carpet welcome.

President Mirziyoyev leads a high-level delegation comprising senior Cabinet ministers and business leaders. During his visit, he will meet President Zardari, hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Sharif, and address the Pakistan-Uzbekistan Business Forum.

Discussions are expected to focus on reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations and exploring new avenues to deepen cooperation across trade, energy, defence, education, people-to-people exchanges, and regional connectivity.

The Uzbek President’s visit comes just a day after Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev concluded his visit to Pakistan on Wednesday, during which both countries signed 37 agreements and formalized a strategic partnership—the first state visit by a Kazakh leader in 23 years.

Pakistan and Uzbekistan established formal diplomatic relations in 1992, and bilateral trade between the two countries stood at around $450 million last year. This marks President Mirziyoyev’s second visit to Pakistan, reflecting the growing strength of bilateral ties and the shared aspirations for peace and prosperity in Central and South Asia.
