US anti-immigrant policies continue, as now Trump moves to bar immigrants from federal housing aid

By The South Asia Times

WASHINGTON - The administration of Donald Trump is advancing new measures to restrict access to federal housing assistance for immigrants without legal status, according to US media reports.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has proposed a rule that would require all applicants for rental assistance to verify their citizenship or eligible immigration status.

Currently, such verification applies only to certain categories of recipients. If adopted, the measure would broaden screening requirements across federal housing programs.

At the same time, the US Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel has issued a new legal opinion reinterpreting the 1996 welfare reform law. The opinion concludes that some immigrants granted temporary “parole” status or other limited legal protections should no longer qualify for federally funded benefits.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the move would prevent “ineligible aliens” from accessing housing funds intended for American citizens.

The 1996 welfare law already restricts most lawful permanent residents from receiving means-tested federal benefits during their first five years in the United States and largely bars undocumented immigrants from public assistance, with limited exceptions.

HUD officials said the proposed rule would also address what they describe as gaps in how assistance is allocated to mixed-status households, ensuring that benefits are provided only to eligible family members.

The proposal has entered the federal notice-and-comment period before it can be finalized.
