Russia's Putin praises Iran’s ‘heroic’ resistance as FM Araghchi visits St. Petersburg

By The South Asia Times

ST. PETERSBURG -  Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for over 90 minutes on Monday, praising Iran’s resistance against the United States and Israel as “heroic” and pledging Moscow’s full support.

“We see how bravely and heroically the Iranian people are fighting for their independence and sovereignty,” Putin told Araghchi in St. Petersburg, adding that “Russia and the whole world admire the Iranian people for their resistance against America” .

The talks covered bilateral relations, regional developments, and what Araghchi described as “the issue of war and aggression by the US and Zionist regimes — discussed and examined in detail”. The Iranian minister called the meeting “very good” and “fruitful”.

Putin confirmed he had received a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader, stating: “Russia will do what it can to support the interests of Iran and other regional countries and help bring peace to West Asia as soon as possible”.

Araghchi thanked Moscow for its support during the recent conflict, declaring that Iran-Russia relations constitute a “strategic partnership” that will continue to strengthen. He also revealed that the US has requested new negotiations, which Tehran is currently considering, noting that Washington has “not achieved a single one of their goals” .

The meeting was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, and GRU military intelligence chief Igor Kostyukov, underscoring the strategic weight of the talks
