Pakistan condemns sentences of Kashmir women leaders by India, urges global action on human rights

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Wednesday strongly condemned the sentencing of Kashmiri political leader Aasiya Andrabi and her associates, calling the move a “grave miscarriage of justice” and urging the international community to take notice of the human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In an official statement, the Foreign Office rejected the life imprisonment handed to Andrabi, along with 30-year prison terms for Fehmeeda Sofi and Nahida Nasreen by a court in New Delhi under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Islamabad said the verdict reflects a broader pattern of “politically motivated prosecutions” aimed at silencing dissent and curbing voices advocating for the rights of the Kashmiri people. It also raised concerns over due process, judicial independence, and compliance with international human rights standards.

Describing Andrabi as a long-standing advocate of the Kashmir cause, Pakistan said her conviction highlights what it termed a shrinking space for political expression and civil liberties in the disputed region.

The statement warned that such actions could further heighten tensions in South Asia and undermine efforts toward peace and stability.

Pakistan called on the United Nations and global human rights bodies to take immediate notice of the situation and hold India accountable. It also urged the protection of fundamental freedoms, including the right to free expression and fair trial.

Reiterating its longstanding position, Pakistan expressed continued support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, as outlined in relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
