Current Israel–U.S. Tensions with Iran: A Pakistani Perspective on Regional Security and Strategic Balance

Current Israel–U.S. Tensions with Iran: A Pakistani Perspective on Regional Security and Strategic Balance

By Tanveer Ahmad Meo

The evolving tensions between Israel, the United States, and Iran have once again placed the Middle East at the center of global strategic concern. While not always a declared full-scale war, the ongoing shadow conflict—marked by proxy engagements, cyber operations, targeted strikes, and intelligence maneuvering—has created a volatile environment with far-reaching implications.

- Impact on the Middle East and Arabian Countries

For Middle Eastern and Arabian states, the situation presents a complex security dilemma. Gulf countries, already navigating fragile geopolitical balances, face increased risks of spillover conflict. Any escalation involving Iran directly threatens regional stability, particularly in critical maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
Countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and others are forced to recalibrate their defense postures while maintaining economic stability. The presence of U.S. military assets in the region further complicates matters, as these states must balance alliances with sovereignty and internal security concerns.

- Oil, Gas, and Global Economic Consequences

The Middle East remains the backbone of global energy supply. Heightened tensions directly affect oil and gas markets, causing price volatility and uncertainty. Even minor disruptions—whether through sanctions, blockades, or military threats—can trigger global economic consequences.

For energy-dependent countries like Pakistan, fluctuations in oil prices translate into economic strain, increased import bills, and inflationary pressures. Thus, stability in the Middle East is not just a regional concern but a critical economic factor for countries worldwide.

- Emerging Missile Technologies and Strategic Concerns

Recent discussions and intelligence disclosures in global discourse suggest growing concerns about missile development programs across various countries. The advancement of long-range missile technologies, including intercontinental capabilities, is often viewed with suspicion by major powers.

However, from a sovereign standpoint, technological advancement in defense systems is not inherently aggressive—it is often a response to perceived threats and a means of ensuring national security. The debate arises when certain nations are allowed unrestricted advancement, while others face pressure, sanctions, or limitations.

- A Pakistani Perspective: Sovereignty and Strategic Balance

From Pakistan’s perspective, the principle is clear: every nation has the right to defend itself and ensure its security in an uncertain global environment. Pakistan’s own defense doctrine has historically been rooted in deterrence—maintaining sufficient capability to prevent conflict rather than initiate it.

In this context, the development of advanced defense technologies, including missile systems, surveillance capabilities, and strategic deterrence mechanisms, is not only justified but necessary. The concept of “offensive monitoring” of threats—anticipating and preparing for future challenges—is an essential part of modern defense strategy.

The Three C’s: Credibility, Capability, Communication For Pakistan, a coherent strategic framework can be summarized through the “Three C’s”:

Credibility: Demonstrating that defense capabilities are real, reliable, and effective.
Capability: Continuously advancing technological and strategic strength to meet evolving threats.
Communication: Clearly conveying intentions and capabilities to both allies and adversaries to avoid miscalculations.
If Pakistan has achieved advancements in its strategic capabilities, transparent and responsible communication can enhance deterrence. A credible posture reduces the likelihood of conflict by signaling preparedness and resolve.

- Conclusion

The current tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran highlight a broader issue in international relations: the imbalance between power, sovereignty, and security rights. While global stability requires restraint and diplomacy, it must also respect the legitimate defense needs of all nations.

For Pakistan and similar states, the path forward lies in maintaining a strong, credible defense while advocating for fairness in global security norms. True peace is not achieved through weakness or imposed limitations, but through balanced deterrence, mutual respect, and responsible statecraft
